Summary of current exhibitions

Geology

The department of Geology is rather new

The first 3 show-cases give an overview of the origin of rocks, the weathering, transport and sedimentation. The history of these processes in our region is shown by a stratigraphic profile of a 2500 meter deep drill-location in the North Sea.

The Netherlands are a region of sedimentation. Therefore a lot of attention is paid to the history of our country in the last 2.5 millon years, the Quaternary, which is characterized by the appearance of glacial periods

These periods had a great impact on the evolution of the landscape in our region which you can see in the exhibition of the geological development of the landscape.

Furthermore you will find fossils of plants and animals and even pieces of fossil beaches of more then 100 million years ago.

Living Nature

Beside dioramas about life in "Ditch& Pool", " Forest", "Moor" and "Dune & Beach many birds are exhibited, as well as a description of the world of insects , "Life of Plants" and much more.

Environment and Archeology

The development of the relationship between Man and his Environment from Prehistory until our times is subject of the exhibition "Man & Environment". In a few models the process of this development is illustrated by showing a number of prehistoric tools from the collection of the museum, related to the environment of the prehistoric man.

Etnography

This department is the old-established part of the museum. The collection includes more than 100 years old unique etnographic objects from Indonesia, China, Africa and Northern America.

At this moment there is an exhibition of objects from the Democratic Republic of Congo titled "Living along the River", including objects from a number of villages and different tribes along the river Zaïre (former Congoriver).

Other activities

Beside the exhibitions the museum organizes courses of geology and living nature, activities for children a.s.o.
